This past weekend, President Luis Abinader was able to provide property certificates to well over 800 person in 21 different sectors of West Santo Domingo and East Santo Domingo. The President told the assembled crowd that his plan is to convert the Dominican Republic into a nation of property owners.
In fact, he said that he intends to deliver as many as 75,000 property deeds between 2025 and 2026. He praised the directors of such agencies as the State Sugar Council, and National Assets who are the spearheads of the drive.
In general terms, the program provides deeds to houses that have been built on state lands, in many cases, and guarantees a roof for needy families.
During his busy round of activities, Luis Abinader also cut the ribbon on the remodeled building housing the remnants of the Sugar Council (CEA), National Assets, and the State Business Corporation (CORDE). CORDE is a remnant of the first post-Trujillo years, and at one time oversaw all of the businesses previously owned by the dictator, such as the Tabacalera, the salt mine in Barahona, the marble deposits on Samana Bay, the Armory and glass factory in San Cristobal, and many, many others. Most have been divested by different administrations.
Though little known, National Assets oversees all the properties owned by the state, estimated a year ago to be worth in the neighborhood of RD$40 trillion, and comprising some 42,000 properties.
