
With a call for unity of the Samana population, President Luis Abinader inaugurated the renovated Samana waterfront, the Santa Barbara de Samana Malecon on Sunday, 1 June 2025. He urged the residents of Samaná province to unite and work together with the government for the comprehensive development of the region. He emphasized the potential of ongoing central government projects to boost the area’s competitiveness as a tourist and economic destination.
The Samaná Malecón project includes hydraulic solutions to mitigate flooding during heavy rains, as well as the comprehensive revitalization of the urban and leisure space. It encompasses 1.3 kilometers of the Samana Bay oceanfront in the municipality of Samaná.
The project features 1.1 km of bike lane, benches and chairs of polished concrete, sidewalks with fiber-reinforced concrete, universal accessibility ramps, sandbanks for children’s play areas and signage.
The Presidency reported the investment was of RD$553,116,725 broken down:
• Improved drainage systems (RD$200,035,193)
• Renovation of the western section (RD$200,473,714)
• Renovation of the eastern section (RD$109,391,492)
• Rehabilitation of public lighting (RD$43,216,324)
Prior to the Malecón inauguration, President Abinader inaugurated the restored Santa Bárbara de Samaná church, which received over RD$24 million in investments that included air conditioning, new stained glass windows, and revetment of the presbytery in mahogany, sidewalks, a fence, lighting and a park gazebo located opposite the church.
President Abinader stressed the importance of community collaboration:
“Let us work together, solve problems together, and face the challenges ahead united. But above all, let us protect our development and safeguard our future.”
The President highlighted Samaná’s promising future and the need for both the government and residents to be prepared to capitalize on it. He pointed to other key projects like Bayport on the east side of the peninsula as part of the Samana transformation. The Abinader administration has also invested heavily in the new road entrance by land from Sanchez to Samana City.
