The Dominican Republic should soon be able to clarify the possible ancestry ties of new Pope Leo XIV with the country now that Ambassador Victor Suarez has presented credentials.
When presenting his letters of credence to Pope Leo XIV on 3 June 2025, Dominican ambassador Victor Valdemar Suarez Diaz also invited the new Pope to visit. The Presidency reports that Suarez told the Pope: “It would be a prophetic sign, Holy Father, if in this Jubilee year, you were to become the first pontiff since Saint John Paul II to set foot on Dominican soil, blessing our ongoing peace efforts.”
The Presidency reported that when Ambassador Suarez extended the invitation to the Pope, he emphasized that the visit would not only for the Pope to see the new Botanical Gardens of Santiago and the renewed Santo Domingo Cathedral, but also to meet with the people who see him as the successor of Peter and the servant of hope. Pope Leo XIV visited the country on several occasions for his work in the Cibao region and the Dominican Republic as a St. Augustine Order priest.
“Today, with God’s grace, I stand before you committed to being a bridge between the Dominican Republic and the Holy See,” Ambassador Suárez Díaz stated. “We will work diligently to promote dialogue and collaboration in areas of shared interest. As a Caribbean nation rich in cultural diversity, the Dominican Republic shares with the Holy See an unwavering commitment to promoting social welfare and human development.”
The diplomat pledged his dedication to actively working towards diplomacy founded on mutual respect, multilateral cooperation, and understanding among nations. He further reaffirmed the country’s desire to contribute to the Church’s efforts in integral human development and environmental protection.
