DR plays in the Concacaf Gold Cup for the first time

The Dominican Republic senior soccer team will be playing in its first Gold Cup on Saturday, 14 June, earning the slot after a perfect campaign in League B of the 2024/25 Concacaf Nations League. The team is under Argentinian manager Marcelo Neveleff.

The Concacaf Gold Cup is the premier men’s senior national team soccer tournament for the North, Central American, and Caribbean region. It is held every two years since 1991.

The 18th Concacaf Gold Cup will take place from 14 June through 6 July 2025 to determine the next champion of the region.

The Dominican soccer team won its six encounters in Group D alongside Bermuda, Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda. The team won 3-2 at Bermuda in its opening match, followed by 2-nil win at home against Dominica and 5-nil wins in its two fixtures against Antigua and Barbuda. The team closed the group stage with a pair of 6-1 wins at Dominica and against Bermuda.

As a first-place team League B, the Dominican Republic secured promotion to League A and direct qualification to the 2025 Gold Cup.

Dorny Romero starred throughout the campaign and finished with 10 goals to collect the Top Scorer Award, presented by Aramco. Defender Junior Firpo dished out three assists and concluded the tournament as the Concacaf Nations League’s top assist provider.

Another triumph of the team was bringing almost 7,000 fans to the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium to watch the team defeat Dominica, its last commitment. Take note that soccer is an emerging sport in the Dominican Republic.

The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup features 16 national teams: the best 15 from the Concacaf region, all of whom qualified through the latest edition of the Concacaf Nations League or the 2025 Gold Cup Prelims, along with one invited guest team, Saudi Arabia.

The Concacaf Gold Cup match schedule breakdown is:
Group A: Mexico, Costa Rica, Suriname, Dominican Republic
Group B: Canada, Honduras, El Salvador and Curacao
Group C: Panama, Jamaica, Guatemala, Guadeloupe
Group D: United States, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Saudi Arabia.

The DR in Group A plays its first against Mexico on Saturday, 14 June 2025 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Next the team will play Costa Rica on 18 June and Suriname on 22 June at the AT&T Stadium of Arlington, Texas.

Next, the knockout stage of the Concacaf Gold Cup will start with the quarterfinals on June 28 and 29, followed by the semifinals on 2 July and the final on Sunday, 6 July, in Houston, Texas. Knockout stage matchups will be determined based on the tournament regulations.

Just one year out from the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Gold Cup is a highly competitive tournament for the region’s best teams and an opportunity for fans to engage with the sport at a pivotal time for its growth in North America, Central American, and the Caribbean.

The championship is the flagship competition for Concacaf akin to the UEFA European Championship or Copa America in other regions, crowning the regional champion and showcasing the best teams from the Americas within this confederation
