Metro Santo Domingo says rail installation for Metro Line 2C is complete

The Office for Transport Reorganization (Opret) in charge of the Santo Domingo Metro announced on 10 June 2025 the completion of the full railway track installation for the new Line 2C, a 7.3-kilometer extension that includes an elevated viaduct, an underground tunnel, and an operational tail section housing the train turnaround system. The subway line is way behind schedule, but advances seem to be made to meet the announcement made by President Luis Abinader that it would be open to the public in February 2026.

The 7.3-kilometer Line 2C extension includes five new stations and is part of Santo Domingo’s integrated Metro-Teleférico system. By linking Los Alcarrizos to the city center via an elevated viaduct and underground tunnel, the project aims to revolutionize regional connectivity, offering rapid transit to over a million residents while improving traffic flow in key corridors.

Opret executive director Rafael Santos Pérez says the metro line construction continues with the completion of the electrical systems such as catenaries, towers, cabling, and signaling, to enable dynamic testing in the coming months. President Luis Abinader has said he plans to ride the test train in September 2025.

A press release from Opret, explains that the Spanish construction consortium, Sistema MSD, responsible for the project, has emphasized the international standards and precision engineering applied to ensure the system meets European regulations for high-demand urban rail networks. The consortium, composed of ASCH Infraestructuras and TRIA, highlighted the use of advanced technologies, including specialized rail systems like the 54E1 rail, S336 fastening systems, U69 counter-rails, and automated lubrication systems, alongside both rigid and flexible catenary networks.

Georgi Petrov, director of Sistema MSD, highlighted the consortium’s 90-year international experience, citing its involvement in major projects across Spain, Chile, Mexico, and Panama. The project also involves over 20 Dominican companies, alongside firms from Spain, France, Germany, and Mexico, reflecting a collaborative effort to transfer technical expertise to local teams.

The Line 2C extension, which connects Santo Domingo to Los Alcarrizos, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion on the route from Los Alcarrizos to the Km 9 (María Montez Station), transforming it into an express corridor for Cibao residents accessing the capital. The project will serve over a million residents and includes road infrastructure upgrades to improve vehicular flow along the marginal route adjacent to the viaduct.

The Opret press release emphasizes the technical continuity of the project, with engineers and technicians from the existing Metro Lines 1 and 2 overseeing construction to ensure seamless integration with the broader Metro-Teleférico system. A technical tour of the site was conducted by consortium representatives, Opret officials, and national professional guilds.
