The Presidency is moving forward the initiative to provide Santo Domingo with a MLB-standard baseball stadium.

President Luis Abinader has named the former president of the Supreme Court of Justice Jorge Subero Isa to chair a special advisory commission in charge of determining the feasibility of constructing a modern baseball stadium on government-owned land in the Ensanche La Fe sector of the National District.

Other key public officials and private sector experts on the commission are the Minister of Sports, the general manager of the Development and Export Bank (Bandex), the executive director of the National Baseball Commissioner’s Office, and legal specialists Angélica Noboa Pagán, Elka Shecker Mendoza, Olivo Rodríguez Huertas. Edgar Torres Reynoso will serve as executive director.

According to the official decree (No. 306-25), the commission’s mandate is to explore the potential for building a stadium that meets Major League Baseball (MLB) international standards, with the aim of positioning Santo Domingo as a future host for high-level baseball events.

Beyond the stadium itself, the group will also evaluate additional urban, sports, and recreational development projects tied to the broader revitalization of the La Fe area.

“This country deserves a sports infrastructure that matches its proud baseball heritage and rising international presence,” the decree states. “The goal is to transform the Dominican Republic into a destination capable of hosting Major League teams while stimulating urban economic growth.”

The commission will report directly to the President and operate under the administrative oversight of the Ministry of Finance. Its work will be temporary and conclude once it fulfills its objective.

With this initiative, the government aims to strengthen its commitment to urban, economic, and sports development in the capital, promoting high-impact projects that combine public and private investment to enhance quality of life.

The president of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (Lidom), Vitelio Mejia thanked the President for the move. Lidom is backing the efforts to build a state-of-the-art stadium.
