Santo Domingo’s seafront boulevard, the Malecón, is quickly becoming a beacon of romance with the new “Marry Me” photo-shooting stage at Plaza Santo Domingo. Since its inauguration in April 2025, the plaza has become a popular spot for marriage proposals and wedding celebrations, offering a picturesque backdrop of the Caribbean Sea, Diario Libre reports.
The Santo Domingo City Hall confirmed the plaza’s romantic appeal, citing two recent events: a heartfelt marriage proposal and an intimate wedding ceremony, both held under the plaza’s versatile pergola last weekend.
Couples wishing to stage their own special moments at Plaza Santo Domingo must secure prior approval from the City Hall. With the necessary permits in hand, individuals can personalize their events, as seen in the recent celebrations that featured elegant lighting, tables, and floral arrangements, all harmonizing with the plaza’s architectural design.
Beyond its romantic allure, Plaza Santo Domingo boasts several features making it ideal for both leisurely and special occasions. Its distinctive red heart sculpture, the multi-purpose pergola, and an open-air amphitheater capable of seating approximately 300 people provide ample space for various activities and stunning photo opportunities.
Adding to its charm, the plaza also hosts a life-sized Buddy Bear sculpture, a symbol of friendship between the Dominican Republic and Germany, crafted by artist Francisco Martínez “Pache.”
The broader Malecón area offers outdoor exercise equipment, ample parking, internal pathways, and municipal surveillance, creating a safe and inviting environment for recreation and sports.
The Plaza Santo Domingo is part of the ongoing revitalization efforts along the Malecón led by Mayor Carolina Mejía. The City Hall has also announced the construction of the Malecon Deportivo and the extension of the Paseo Maritimo to include major sports and recreational facilities for the area.
The Malecón itself has also seen significant upgrades, including the installation of 700 new solar lamps, greatly improving visibility and contributing to energy savings along the scenic roadway.
