Metro service between Parque Mirador Norte and Villa Mella closed for modernization, bus service expanded

The Santo Domingo Metro Office (Opret) has announced a five-day suspension of service on a key section of the Santo Domingo Metro, beginning Wednesday, 16 July through Sunday, 20 July 2025. The shutdown will affect the line between Mamá Tingó (Villa Mella) and Hermanas Mirabal (Parque Mirador Norte) stations in Santo Domingo North, as crews carry out system modernization work.

Opret explains that from Wednesday, 16 July to Friday, 18 July, service will be suspended between the Francisco Peña Gómez (Los Guaricanos) and Mamá Tingó stations, in Villa Mella. Meanwhile, on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th, the suspension will affect the stretch between the Hermanas Mirabal station (near Mirador Norte Park) and Mamá Tingó.

The upgrade will involve the installation and certification of a new signaling and traffic light system by a German firm specializing in transit technologies. This modernization is a critical step toward the Metro’s expansion plan, which includes the introduction of six-car trains expected to enter service by August 2025.

According to Opret executive director Rafael Santos Pérez, the improvements aim to enhance service quality and significantly reduce overcrowding during peak hours—particularly in the heavily used northern municipality of Santo Domingo North, which will be the most affected by the temporary closure.

To maintain commuter mobility during the suspension, the Metropolitan Office of Bus Services (OMSA) will deploy 62 buses to operate along the affected route, providing an alternative link between Mamá Tingó and Hermanas Mirabal stations.
