Dominicans who renewed their passports as of 2020 during the Abinader administration may find themselves with passports where the front cover lettering is fading. Tenders for passport booklets at the Passport Office with the change of government had fallen under multiple complaints.
The present administrator of the Passport Office, Lorenzo David Ramirez has gone on record saying the situation does not affect passports issued during his term. He began in June 2024. Ramirez is the third choice to direct the office made by President Luis Abinader.
The previous administrations during the Abinader administration were Nestor Cruz Pichardo, appointed in 2020 and removed in January 2023. He was replaced by Digna Reynoso, the wife of the president of the Chamber of Deputies Alfredo Pacheco, appointed in January 2023. Her term was also seriously criticized for delays and the tendering of the improved Dominican passport. She was removed in June 2024 amidst many complaints.
The Passport Office has announced that a tender will be held for the issuing of an electronic passport. But this has not yet happened. The electronic passport would make forging the passport difficult if not impossible.
President Luis Abinader had announced in January 2025 that the new electronic passports would be available as of August 2025. The Passports Office has not issued a date for the new passports.
