The Senate passed the Penal Code that now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for approval. The present legislation closes on 24 July 2025 and reopens on 16 August 2025.
The Penal Code as approved is criticized for articles that would criminalize the right to social protests, allow the prescription of government corruption crimes and child abuse, release from legal responsibility to political parties and city governments, grant penal immunity to church representatives. The Penal Code also failed to incorporate the three exceptions for abortion.
