Guinness World Record for Mofongo

The mofongo is a dish popular in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Most people will eat it in a restaurant.

This traditional dish is made primarily with fried green plantains that are mashed with garlic, olive oil, and pork cracklings or bacon, and often formed into a ball or mound. It’s commonly served with a savory broth or alongside meat, seafood, or vegetables.

Now the people of Santiago have set a new culinary record. The Guinness World Record for the largest green plantain ball was achieved on Saturday, 26 July 2025, with the creation of a colossal 560-kilogram (1,234-pound) mofongo, prepared in Santiago de los Caballeros’ central park.

Hundreds gathered to witness the historic event, with official verification provided by Susana Reyes, international adjudicator for Guinness World Records.

“I can confirm that this is the largest mofongo dish with the largest plantain ball in the world,” Reyes announced following the official weigh-in. The impressive 560-kilogram result far exceeded the 200-kilogram minimum set by Guinness for this category, solidifying the Dominican Republic’s place in culinary history.

The Mofongo is a celebration of Dominicans’ African and Spanish roots. It evolved from the African dish fufu (mashed starchy vegetables), which was adapted in the Caribbean with locally available ingredients like plantains.
