New data reveals that Haitian migrants represented a substantial 10.53% of all deaths from homicides, suicides, and accidents in the Dominican Republic during 2024, as reported in Diario Libre. These figures offer a glimpse into the size of the Haitian population within the country and the challenging conditions many face.
According to the National Statistics Office (ONE) in its “2024 Yearbook of Accidental and Violent Deaths,” released on 25 July 2025, of the 4,187 individuals who died from these four causes, 441 were from Haiti. Another 261 were from other countries or their nationality was not recorded.
Haitian immigrants were particularly overrepresented in intentional homicide statistics, making up 16.62% of victims. Out of 1,041 intentional homicide deaths, 173 were Haitian, compared to 864 Dominicans. The remaining victims included two Mexicans, one Chinese national, and one American.
Additionally, Haitians accounted for 11.98% of all deaths from unintentional homicides, 9.49% of traffic accident fatalities, and 3.53% of suicides. In the latter category, out of 651 suicides recorded, 23 were Haitian, 611 were Dominican, and 17 were of other nationalities.
Diario Libre reports the statistics reveal that once again, traffic accidents were the primary cause of death in the Dominican Republic, responsible for 1,961 fatalities, representing 45.98% of all accidental and violent deaths. This marks the highest number of traffic-related deaths in the last 18 years, surpassing the 2010 record of 1,959 individuals. Deaths on public roads continue to outnumber both voluntary and involuntary homicides, which accounted for 29.26% of deaths.
The year 2024 saw 126 deaths of women under violent circumstances, a 5.97% reduction compared to the previous year. Between 2009 and 2024, the annual average for such deaths was 164. The years with the highest number of cases were 2011 (225 deaths), 2010 (202), and 2017 (194).
