Social and Economic Council prepares final report on recommendations for addressing Haitian crisis

A comprehensive dialogue on the Haitian crisis, spearheaded by the Social and Economic Council (CES), is nearing its conclusion with the final recommendations set to be presented to President Luis Abinader and former Presidents Hipólito Mejía, Leonel Fernández, and Danilo Medina. This crucial step follows weeks of intensive discussions by various stakeholders on the multifaceted implications of the situation in Haiti for the Dominican Republic, according to a CES press release.

Just one week after the conclusion of thematic working groups, the General Coordination Committee for the “Dialogue on the Haitian Crisis and its Implications for the Dominican Republic” met on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, at the CES meeting hall. The meeting focused on reviewing the progress of the dialogue and updating the projected timeline for the final stages.

Attendees included delegates representing President Luis Abinader, former Presidents Hipólito Mejía, Leonel Fernández, and Danilo Medina, as well as representatives from the three sectors comprising the CES.

During the meeting, committee members lauded the dedication and effort demonstrated by all participants across the six thematic tables. These groups concurrently addressed critical areas: Migration, Bilateral Trade, Development of Border Communities, National Security, International Relations, and Labor Affairs. The broad engagement underscores the national commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by the Haitian crisis.

A significant decision from the meeting was the immediate distribution of the six documents detailing the findings from each thematic table to the respective delegates. These preliminary results are currently under strict review by the President and the former presidents. This controlled dissemination is a precursor to the CES’s final consolidated report.

To facilitate this crucial consolidation, the General Coordination Committee has appointed a drafting commission. This commission, working in conjunction with the CES, is tasked with crafting a unified document that will systematically organize the key findings, identify overarching themes, and highlight strategic agreements reached during the extensive dialogue process.

Upon the completion of this comprehensive final report, the CES will announce the method and timeline for its official submission to the President and the former presidents, marking a pivotal moment in the Dominican Republic’s strategy to navigate the ongoing Haitian crisis.
