Responding to demand, the Opret, the office that manages the Santo Domingo metro lines and the skylifts, announced new schedules for these mass transport services.
The Santo Domingo Metro as of 31 July 2025 is now open half an hour earlier than previously announced. The earlier 5:30am opening time comes as a blessing for commuters. Long queues form every morning. The service is offered through 10:30pm.
On Saturdays, the Santo Domingo Metro will close earlier at 10pm. And on Sundays, the schedule will be from 6am to 10pm.
The Santo Domingo Metro is also adding more cars to serve the hundreds of thousands who board Greater Santo Domingo’s mass transit service. For RD$20 you can cross the city. There is no better bargain. Prices have not been increased since the service started in 2009, at the start of the third term in the government of former President Leonel Fernandez.
The Opret office announced that the service of the Santo Domingo skylifts is from Monday to Friday, from 5:30am to 10:30pm. Saturdays, from 5:30am to 9pm, and Sundays from 8am to 9pm. There are two skylifts in Greater Santo Domingo – across the Ozama River (in the East) and covering Los Alcarrizos (in the North).
Luis Jimenez, a regular rider on the Metro, says that the service started promptly on 31 July at 5:30am. He said on the car he rode all the seats were taken, but there were no people standing at 5:30am on that first day of the new schedule.
