President Luis Abinader was at Las Americas International Airport on Wednesday, 13 August 2025 for the inauguration of the state-of-the-art US$10 million courier terminal. Customs Agency director, Eduardo Sanz Lovaton explained the facility is the result of a successful public-private partnership.
The terminal, which was built with no cost to the Dominican government, will increase the airport’s package processing capacity by 186%, allowing it to handle over 4 million additional packages annually. Spanning more than 4,800 square meters, the facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including advanced X-ray equipment to expedite inspections and bolster national security.
According to Sanz Lovatón, the new terminal will help the country become a “world-class logistics hub.” It is designed to operate 24/7, offering faster dispatch, improved security, and enhanced tracking for packages. The project, which began construction in May 2023, was a direct response to the continuous growth of e-commerce in the country.
Courier activity is up as the current low allows people to import tax free items billed at US$200 or less.
Mónika Infante, CEO of Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), emphasized the company’s commitment to the nation’s development. “This new terminal, intended for the Customs Agency, will allow for more agile, secure, and efficient management,” she said.
During the inauguration, the Dominican Association of Courier Companies (ASODEC) presented President Abinader with an award, recognizing his leadership and vision in making the project a reality.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, including the ministers of Defense, Tourism, and the Presidency.
