Good news for interns and apprentices

The Ministry of Higher Education has just issued a new standard that regulates the work relationship of apprentices and interns. The National Higher Education Council has approved the new guidelines for these student workers.

One part of Resolution 02-2025 states that the “Practice Center” (where the intern or professional student is learning the trade) can provide economic support for the student’s transportation and food. In addition, the council urges all institutions of higher education to include internships in the regular curriculum as a manner of providing a deeper understanding of the workplace.

The resolution also states that the temporary nature of the internship of apprenticeship do not represent a work contract by the agency providing the hands-on learning experience. These young, budding professionals are also prohibited from taking part in strikes or work stoppages, as well as being prohibited from joining unions.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Higher Education establishes the hours of supervised work for each academic credit in the course. The resolution also includes certain rights of the student, such as training, mentoring, equipment, and so forth.
