Dominican Republic in Managua for the FIBA AmeriCup 2025

The Dominican senior basketball team is in Nicaragua to compete in the FIBA AmeriCup 2025, the prestigious continental tournament that will be held from 22 to 31 August 22 at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello in Managua, Nicaragua.

The participating nations are Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

This is the DR’s 15th appearance at the prestigious continental tournament. The team traveled from Puerto Rico to Nicaragua after playing friendship games vs Puerto Rico as a warm up for the AmeriCup.

The Dominican squad is led by national team captain Víctor Liz, alongside Gelvis Solano, Eloy Vargas, Andrés Féliz, Jean Montero, Ángel Delgado, David Jones, Joel Soriano, Jassel Pérez, Juan Miguel Suero, Ángel Núñez and Juan Guerrero.

At the helm is veteran coach Néstor “Che” García, who is supported by an experienced staff including David Díaz, Abraham Disla, and fellow Argentine Martín Luis.

This time around, NBA stars such as Al Horford and Karl Anthony Towns are not with the team. The team is betting on the talent of many players who are stars in the Spanish basketball league, including Andres Feliz, Jean Montero and Jassel Perez.

The Dominican Republic has been drawn into Group C alongside Colombia, host nation Nicaragua, and reigning champions Argentina, who secured their third AmeriCup gold in the last edition — tying them with Puerto Rico and trailing only the USA (7 titles) and Brazil (4).

All 12 teams will play a round-robin format in the group stage. The top two from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the Quarterfinals. These eight teams will be ranked 1 through 8 based on their group performance.

Adding intrigue to the tournament, head coach Néstor “Che” García will once again face his native Argentina. Their last encounter ended in a dramatic fashion with the Dominican Republic eliminating Argentina from FIBA World Cup 2023 contention with a stunning road win.
