New: Line 511 is for road assistance

Drivers in the Dominican Republic now have a new, easy-to-remember number to call for roadside assistance. The Fideicomiso RD Vial has launched 511, a dedicated line for reporting emergencies and incidents on the nation’s main highways. This new number replaces the previous 829-688-1000 and is designed to provide a faster, more efficient response.

The launch of 511 is a significant step toward aligning the Dominican Republic’s road safety efforts with international standards. The new number is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which includes countries like the United States and Canada. This adoption of an international standard aims to modernize the driving experience and improve accessibility to immediate help for motorists.

The 511 service is managed by the Integrated Roadside Assistance Service, which is operated by the Military and Police Commission (Comipol). From this single number, drivers can quickly request help for vehicle breakdowns, accidents, and other hazardous situations on the national road network.

This new service is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the Integrated Roadside Assistance Service. The Comipol is currently in the process of adding over 200 new mobile units to its fleet, which includes tow trucks, ambulances, mobile workshops, and motorcycles. This expansion is expected to significantly increase the service’s capacity, reduce response times, and elevate the standard of care for drivers across the country.

“With the implementation of 511, we are multiplying the installed capacity of the Integrated Roadside Assistance Service, which represents a direct investment in the safety and peace of mind of our citizens,” said Hostos Rizik Lugo, executive director of RD Vial. “This tool reinforces our commitment to offering a faster and more efficient response, aligned with the best international practices in road safety.”

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Fideicomiso RD Vial, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), and the board of directors of Indotel, which approved the designation of 511 as a special basic service number.

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is an integrated telephone numbering plan serving 20 North American countries that share its resources. These countries include the United States and its territories, Canada, Bermuda, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, Sint Maarten, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks & Caicos.
