Dominican Republic’s AmeriCup run ends in quarterfinals defeat to Brazil

The Dominican Republic’s men basketball team saw its AmeriCup journey come to an end on Thursday, 28 August 2025 after a 94-82 loss to Brazil in the quarterfinals of the championship taking place in Managua, Nicaragua. Despite a promising start and a valiant effort, the Dominicans couldn’t overcome key absences and a late-game surge from the powerhouse Brazilian squad.

The Dominicans, led by their quick-witted guards, looked strong in the first half, but a late run by Brazil saw them trail 47-42 at halftime. In the third quarter, Brazil, a perennial contender in American basketball, extended their lead to a commanding 11 to 13 points, a margin that would prove too difficult for the Dominicans to close.

A glimmer of hope appeared early in the final quarter when Jassel Pérez sank two crucial three-pointers, cutting the deficit to 75-67. However, the Brazilians quickly responded, squashing any chance of a comeback.

The loss was compounded by critical player absences. The team was without key scorer David Jones, who was suspended for the game following a scuffle in a previous match against Argentina. In a further blow, guard Jean Montero was ejected in the third quarter, and Andrés Feliz fouled out in the fourth, leaving the Dominicans shorthanded at a crucial time.

This defeat marks the 12th loss in 14 matches against Brazil for the Dominican Republic in FIBA-organized tournaments.

Andrés Feliz led the scoring for the Dominicans with 14 points, along with seven assists. Jean Montero added 12 points, Joel Soriano contributed 12 points and four rebounds, and Juan Guerrero chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. For Brazil, Yago Santos poured in 25 points, while Georginho De Paula led all scorers with 28 points, and Bruno Caboclo added 19.

Brazil would play the finals against Argentina, with the third place to be decided by Canada and USA on Sunday, 31 August.
