Amazon chose the Dominican Republic to be its second regional logistics hub. The air hub operations begin on Wednesday, 3 September 2025 at Las Americas International Airport (SDQ).
The goal of the Santo Domingo hub is to provide faster and more reliable shipping across the Caribbean and Latin America, boosting e-commerce in the region.
Customs Agency director Eduardo Sanz Lovatón has explained that e-commerce is changing the national logistics dynamics. “Today, 60% of online purchases are transported by air, when just two decades ago the majority arrived by sea. This shows how our economy is evolving and the country’s role as a distribution center,” he pointed out.
This year, Las Americas International had already inaugurated a modern package and courier reception center, designed to respond to the growth of international transport.
Amazon Air Cargo will operate seven flights per week between its network and Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, marking the Dominican Republic as Amazon’s first cargo hub in the Caribbean and the second in Latin America. These flights will be operated using Boeing 767 aircraft, with a weekly capacity of approximately 770 metric tons.
The operation at Las Americas is the second major effort of Amazon to reach out to offer better service to customers in Latin America. Amazon in June 2025 had enhanced its South American operations through a partnership with Avianca Cargo, providing daily flights between Miami and Bogotá, Colombia to enhance airfreight capacity between the US and Latin America. Amazon Air Cargo has partnered with Avianca Cargo to facilitate air freight between the United States and Colombia and offers a daily Boeing 767-300 freighter service between Miami and Bogotá to meet the growing demand for cross-border commerce.
These developments highlight Amazon’s expanding presence in the region, using a combination of its own dedicated hubs and strategic partnerships to enhance its logistics network.
