Tourism Minister David Collado has inaugurated the reconstruction of several key streets in the popular tourist town of Sosúa. The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that the benefits of tourism are felt directly by local communities.
The reconstruction work, which local residents had long advocated for, included the streets of Bajada del Tablón, La Gallera, Benigno Lantigua, and the Valedor sector circuit.
During the inauguration ceremony on Sunday, Collado emphasized that the growth of tourism should be a positive force for local communities. “We believe in tourism that has a positive impact on communities, on their people,” he said. “And the work we are inaugurating today is the best reflection of that.”
Collado expressed his firm belief that “where tourism arrives, development arrives.”
The project, which spanned a total of 4.35 kilometers, involved laying asphalt concrete pavement, as well as constructing new sidewalks, curbs, and speed bumps. It also included the installation of a new storm drainage system with the creation of catch basins and filters, along with new horizontal and vertical road signs.
The work was executed by the Executive Committee for Tourist Zone Infrastructure (CEIZTUR) at a total cost of RD$95,974,800.
• Gregorio Luperón Street (Bajada del Tablón): This 550-meter-long street now has a 6-meter-wide asphalt concrete surface. The project also included new trapezoidal side gutters, slope protection, and updated road signs.
• Benigno Lantigua Street: This 600-meter section, measuring 4.60 meters wide, received a new asphalt surface, along with new catch basins, filters, side gutters, speed bumps, curbs, and road signs.
• La Gallera Street: This street now features 1.2 kilometers of new 5.20-meter-wide asphalt, with new catch basins, filters, side gutters, speed bumps, curbs, and signage.
• Valedor Sector Circuit: The largest part of the project covered 2 kilometers of the circuit. The reconstruction included new asphalt pavement, catch basins, filters, side gutters, speed bumps, curbs, retaining walls, and sidewalks, along with the repair of existing sewers and new road signs.
The street renovations add to the around RD$600 million invested in the Sosua Beach area to enhance Sosua as a family-friendly destination. The destination is expecting the arrival of Disney Cruise Line in 2026.
