Unicef donates shelters to Migration Agency

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has donated three shelters for children, adolescents, and pregnant or lactating women who are awaiting deportation by the Directorate General of Migration (DGM). These centers are located in /Santiago, Dajabon, and Elias Piña.

According to the press release, the three areas are valued at over RD$18 million and were set up by Unicef. The DGM signed an agreement that requires the agency to maintain conditions that respect the dignity of the interns, as well as protect them from abuses and provide specialized services to these vulnerable groups.

The treatment of the persons interned in the holding shelters will be under the cover of Law 285-04, which governs the DGM and Law 136-03 that covers the rights of children and adolescents.
