Max Puig leads Dominican mission to New York Climate Week

The Dominican Republic is participating in the 2025 New York Climate Week in New York City, with a high-level delegation led by Max Puig, the executive vice president of the National Council for Climate Change and Carbon Market (CNCCMC). The annual event, which brings together top leaders from government, business, academia, and civil society, runs parallel to the United Nations General Assembly.

Puig, along with CNCCMC technical director and COP vice president Sara González, arrived in New York to represent the nation. The Presidency highlighted that their participation underscores the Dominican Republic’s commitment to tackling climate change.

Puig emphasized the country’s dedication to key climate initiatives, including strengthening adaptation strategies, ensuring a just energy transition, and implementing national carbon markets. He noted that the delegation’s attendance is about more than just discussion; it’s a chance for the Dominican Republic to share its experiences and elevate its voice on a global stage.

“Climate change is not a future challenge, but a present one,” Puig stated. He added that the country has “reaffirmed its determination to move toward a resilient, low-carbon development model.”

The delegation’s involvement in New York Climate Week is also a crucial part of the preparations for COP30, set to be held in Belém do Pará, Brazil, in 2025. The official press release from the Presidency says that by the country actively participating in these global forums, the Dominican Republic reinforces its leadership role in promoting multilateral cooperation to address the climate crisis.

Puig will also join President Luis Abinader for high-level UN events focused on sustainable development during the General Assembly.
