President Luis Abinader before taking off for New York City to participate in business and government affairs under the umbrella of the 80th United Nations General Assembly used about 10 minutes of his regular Monday press conference to highlight his agenda in New York. Throughout the meeting, he is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Relations Roberto Alvarez and Dominican ambassador in the United States, Maria Isabel Castillo Baez
Abinader traveled to New York on Monday, 22 September and will return on Wednesday, 24 September in the evening. He said he is scheduled to speak at the UN at 12:50pm on Wednesday. He is expected to once again speak up for international support to end the multidimensional crisis in Haiti, a country controlled by violent gangs. This will be Abinader’s fifth appearance at the General Debate, and in all he has appealed on the behalf of Haiti.
Abinader said his agenda is packed with meetings with leading businesspeople and investors.
On his political agenda, there is a bilateral meeting with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of Jordan.
Other meetings are with the membership of the Council of the Americas. Minister of Hacienda Magin Diaz and Minister of Industry and Commerce Victor (Ito) Bisono will be present. The president of the Council of the Americas is Andres Gluski, of AES Corporation. AES has been a player in the energy sector in the Dominican Republic.
Abinader mentioned he would participate in the forum of the Atlantic Council.
The business activities are part of efforts of the Dominican government to coordinate the business events of the Summit of the Americas in Punta Cana in December 2025.
He said he will participate in the reception offered by the President of the United States to visiting heads of state and government.
He mentioned participating in a dinner with the Centro Empresarial Alianza por Iberoamerica (CEAPI) and the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom. The Ceapi gathers more than 300 CEOs of the largest companies in Iberoamerica, grouping 20 countries in Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
He also said he would participate in the Concordia Annual Summit, described as an event that convenes the world’s most prominent business, government, and nonprofit leaders to foster dialogue and enable effective partnerships for positive social impact. This global affairs forum takes place in New York City and examines the world’s most pressing challenges to identify avenues for collaboration.
He said before returning to the Dominican Republic, he would have a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez is already in New York for the UN General Assembly. On Monday, 22 September 2025, Álvarez issued a strong call to the United Nations Security Council, urging them to approve a new security mission for neighboring Haiti, which has been mired in a severe, multi-year crisis that has left thousands dead.
During his address, Álvarez made an “energetic appeal” to the Security Council to “urgently” pass a resolution proposed by the United States and Panama. This resolution aims to transform the current Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission into a hybrid force. Under this new structure, the UN would take over the logistics and operations, and the mission would be granted a more robust mandate to establish security. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for elections in Haiti.
