President Luis Abinader said during his Monday press conference on 29 September 2025 that it is likely the mandate for the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti would be extended through December 2025.
Abinader said the United States is looking to financially back the expanding of the security force in Haiti to more than 5,000 men. Reports are that plans are under discussion to transform the current MSS mission into a larger Gang Suppression Force supported by new UN frameworks.
Abinader defended the Kenyan-led effort, saying only 700 men of the proposed 2,500 Kenyan force actually traveled to Haiti. He said these were used to defend Haitian government institutions and infrastructure mainly in Port-au-Prince.
The President said that the Dominican Republic continues with its enhanced border control.
