Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez declares US country’s key partner

Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Álvarez underscored the nation’s “strategic relevance” to the United States, calling the US the country’s principal commercial partner and political ally.

Álvarez delivered the keynote address, “The Dominican Republic in an Uncertain Geopolitical World,” at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters as part of the 33rd edition of Dominican Week in the United States. His presentation offered a detailed analysis of the current bilateral relationship and the steps the Dominican Republic is taking to strengthen it.

The Foreign Relations Minister emphasized the robust economic ties, revealing that trade in goods between the two countries totaled US$154.8 billion between 2015 and 2024, as reported in El Dia. US exports accounted for US$98.5 billion, while Dominican exports reached US$56.28 billion.

“The US market consumes 56% of our exports and is the source of 41% of our imports,” Álvarez stated, highlighting the profound integration of the two economies.

He also outlined how the Dominican Republic is preparing to navigate an international environment marked by geopolitical tensions, shifting trade policies, and the need for stronger regional cooperation on security, investment, and innovation.

Dominican Ambassador to the OAS Mayerlyn Cordero Díaz was the coordinator for the Dominican participation. A Q&A session was included moderated by Steven Puig, vice president of the AMCHAMDR Board of Directors. The session allowed direct dialogue between the Dominican delegation and the Foreign Minister on the nation’s foreign policy priorities.

Ambassador Cordero and Ambassador to the United States María Isabel Castillo presented a special recognition to Álvarez, praising his leadership. Cordero highlighted that “Minister Álvarez has distinguished his career with firm and visionary leadership in defense of democracy, human rights, and regional integration. His voice reflects the vision of a government that believes in peace, solidarity, and cooperation between nations.”

The Dominican officials took advantage of the event to promote the X Summit of the Americas, which will be held in Punta Cana from 1 to 5 December 2025, under the theme, “Building a Secure and Shared Prosperity Hemisphere.”

Minister Álvarez positioned the upcoming summit as a crucial opportunity to overcome regional division. “The polarization in our hemisphere has undermined the adoption of regional policies that should be mobilizing capital for sustainable economic growth and social progress,” he expressed. “We believe the December Summit in Punta Cana is a valuable opportunity to cultivate common ground around a practical and constructive agenda that mobilizes human and financial capital for the mutual benefit of each of our countries and all our peoples.”
