Government announces Senasa and SNS to strengthen public health network, yet where is the auditing?

The National Health Insurance Plan (Senasa) and the National Health Service (SNS) announced they are working together to reinforce the country’s public hospital network and ensure access to primary care services for beneficiaries under the Subsidized Health Insurance Regime.

During a second coordination meeting between the two institutions—this time also involving directors from various healthcare centers—Dr. Mario Lama (SNS) and newly-appointed Senasa director, Edward Guzmán led discussions focused on key national health priorities. The session marked the beginning of strategic planning aimed at delivering a more efficient healthcare response to those covered under Senasa’s subsidized plan, the Presidency reports.

Emphasizing the importance of institutional collaboration, Guzman noted: “SNS and SeNaSa must maintain permanent coordination because the success of one directly impacts the efficiency of the other.” He added, “We are confident that as we strengthen SNS, Senasa will also grow stronger.”

The meeting comes as the deadline approaches for private clinics whose capitated payment contracts were suspended, a move aimed at protecting the continuity of care for Senasa’s subsidized affiliates.

The lack of trustworthy government inspections and auditing controls to detect irregularities in time is back making headlines after the first reports of the irregularities at the state health insurance company, Senasa exploded.

Government officials seem to be free with signing contracts creating lucrative business opportunities but that may not be in the best interest of the general public.

In an opinion piece in El Nacional, Orlando Gomez observes that Senasa never published its audited statements for 2024 and urges the government to restore external auditing.
