The US government earlier this year had notified the Abinader administration that two individuals working in the Dominican government were suspect of involvement in the exporting of cocaine to the United States.

Following, President Luis Abinader would cancel the appointment ofFabio August Jorge Puras (alias Vecino) (Decree 273-25 in May 2025) as honorary free zones sector advisor to the President (Decree 241-21). Noticias SIN reports that in addition to Jorge Puras being a free zone advisor to the Presidency, he also served as a high-ranking executive for the Aguilas Cibaenas baseball team, based in Santiago de los Caballeros

In the same drug trafficking case, Gaspar Antonio Polanco Virella (alias El Grande), a former director of Public Services at the National District and former security of former President Hipolito Mejia, is also accused. Hipolito Mejia is the father of current National District Mayor Carolina Mejia.

The individuals have been formally accused by a Federal jury in the Miami Southern District Court for conspiring to traffic and export cocaine to the United States from the Dominican Republic, Colombia and other countries. The indictment was presented in the Miami court on 30 September 2025. The two individuals are accused of participating in an international cocaine distribution network that operated between 2019 and December 2020.

If found guilty, Jorge Puras and Polanco Virella face fines of 10 years to life sentence, in addition to the seizing of property, bank accounts and millionaire assets tied to international drug trafficking operations.

Judicial documents state that both were formally charged on September 30, 2025, under case number 25-CR-20430-MOORE/D’ANGELO by the Federal Grand Jury of the Southern District of Florida. The indictment establishes that, from 2019 until December 2020, the defendants allegedly operated a drug trafficking network with connections in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and the United States, aimed at introducing more than five kilograms of cocaine into US territory.

The individuals are expected to voluntarily travel to the United States to face charges.
