International Theater Festival kicks off, Spain is the guest country

The Ministry of Culture officially inaugurated the XII International Theater Festival of the Dominican Republic 2025 (FITE RD 2025) in a ceremony at the Máximo Avilés Blonda Hall of the Palace of Fine Arts on 19 October 2025. The festival continues through 30 October with events in several provinces under the banner “Theater is All of Us.” Spain is the guest country of the festival.

The inaugural night concluded with the official start of the festival’s ten-day run: a performance of “El alcalde de Zalamea” (The Mayor of Zalamea), an emblematic Spanish Golden Age piece, performed by the guest company, Teatro Corsario.

The Spanish company Teatro Corsario is honored as the guest of honor, and the entire festival pays tribute to Freddy Ginebra, the founder of Casa de Teatro.

Minister of Culture, Roberto Ángel Salcedo, led the opening event and emphasized the government’s dedication to the arts. “The Ministry of Culture takes on this festival as a genuine state commitment because we believe in theater as a living heritage and a powerful force for thought, which also forges citizenship,” Salcedo stated.

The festival is also positioned as a strategy for cultural decentralization, aiming to make the performing arts accessible nationwide. “This festival reaffirms itself as a strategy of cultural decentralization, taking the scenic art to every corner of the Dominican Republic and strengthening the commitment of the Dominican state to equitable access to culture,” added Amaury Sánchez, Vice Minister of Creativity and Artistic Training.

Rícharson Díaz, director of Theater Festivals, highlighted the event’s sustained growth and its importance for promoting Dominican scenic art. The festival boasts a robust international presence, featuring 15 international companies from countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. They join 17 national companies, four state-run companies, and a special representation from the Dominican diaspora in the United States.

In total, the XII FITE RD 2025 will stage 75 artistic presentations in a total of eight cities: Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, and La Romana.

Tickets for all performances are available at the Teatro Nacional box office for RD$200.
