UASD ramps up security after fatal campus shooting

The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) is implementing a sweeping new security protocol and major infrastructure upgrades following the tragic on-campus shooting death of a security employee by a student.

The rector announced the new measures during the wake for the security guard, who was fatally shot by a Law student in a shocking incident on campus. The rector lamented the loss, stating, “We are failing in elementary things; it is not possible that people who are doing their duty have their lives taken. What happened is very regrettable; a member of our university family has lost his life in a fatal incident.”

In response to the tragedy, the UASD is moving quickly to reinforce safety across the entire university grounds:
• Increased personnel and surveillance: The university will immediately increase the presence of security staff and install surveillance cameras at strategic points to deter future incidents.
• Parking tower remodeling: The rector confirmed that the parking tower is undergoing renovation to improve facilities and ease parking for both visitors and students.
• Enhanced internal mobility: To improve movement across the sprawling campus, two transit trains will be introduced to service the entire university.
• Stricter access controls: The university is reinforcing existing security with tighter controls at all entry and exit points and establishing new checkpoints to ensure the safety of the entire community.

Beyond physical security, the university is also addressing the well-being of its community and promoting a culture of peace:
• Community workshops: Students, faculty, and staff are being called upon to participate in workshops and talks focused on coexistence and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. The rector stressed that violence “cannot be tolerated under any circumstances” and called for collaboration to create a respectful environment.
• Psychological support: A dedicated psychological support team has been activated to assist students and employees impacted by the incident, aiming to foster an atmosphere of respect and well-being.

The rector also provided an update on the second employee, Juan Manuel Méndez, who was injured in the incident involving student Alexander Jiménez Garbán. Méndez is reportedly improving and has been transferred to another health center at his own request.
Meanwhile, the accused student is scheduled to appear in court this Friday, 24 October 2025 for a hearing to determine coercive measures.
