Dominican Republic readies landmark sustainable tourism strategy with UN collaboration

The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) is on track to unveil its comprehensive National Sustainable Tourism Strategy and Policy in December 2025, marking a major step toward a more competitive and climate-resilient tourism model. The announcement follows the completion of the third technical mission of a key development cooperation project with the UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO), as reported by Noticias SIN.

A most recent, intensive 12-day mission, a collaboration between Mitur and UN Tourism, focused on validating the draft of the national strategy. It served to gather crucial feedback from a wide spectrum of key stakeholders, including representatives from the public, private, academic, and community sectors.

The mission aimed to strengthen institutional capabilities and lay the groundwork for effective national and local implementation of the policy.

The visiting UN Tourism technical mission included Natalia Bayona, UN Tourism executive director; Gustavo Santos, regional director for the. Americas, Jaime Mayaki, director of International Development and Cooperation and Antonio López de Ávila, director of Innovation, Education, and Investments.

The strategy is designed to ensure tourism growth is based on competitiveness, inclusivity, and climate resilience, aligning the nation’s efforts with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Agenda 2030.

The official presentation and launch of the final National Sustainable Tourism Strategy and Policy are scheduled for the fourth and final project mission set to take place in December 2025.
