President Luis Abinader explained that named US ambassador Leah Francis Campos did not arrive on Wednesday, 22 October 2025 as originally had been planned. Her arrival was postponed because of the inconveniences caused by the intense rains of the outer bands of Tropical Storm Melissa.
President Abinader said during his weekly press conference on Monday, 27 October that Campos would come over the weekend. He did not detail the date.
Campos has yet to present credentials to Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez, and then to the President to formally commence her term as ambassador. The country was without a US ambassador all throughout the Biden administration. The DR did keep a US ambassador in Sonia Guzman throughout the past US administration. She has been replaced by Ambassador Maria Isabel Castillo Baez.
