José Ángel Gómez Canaán, widely known as Jochi, is accused of utilizing at least seven companies he owned or was closely linked to in the execution of alleged crimes that include sabotage of the Santo Domingo traffic light network, terrorism, money laundering, fraud against the state, and criminal association, according to the formal indictment presented by the Public Ministry, Diario Libre highlights after the indictment was made.

Gómez Canaán, who is indicted alongside former National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) director Hugo Beras and several others, reportedly employed these companies to secure what the prosecution describes as fraudulent contracts with Intrant. This agency, governed by Law 63-17, is the national authority responsible for regulating mobility, land transport, traffic, and road safety in the Dominican Republic.

The indictment details that through these fraudulent contracts and multiple addenda, Gómez Canaán allegedly siphoned millions from state coffers “for nonexistent or overvalued services.”

A significant portion of these ill-gotten funds was purportedly used to acquire expensive real estate both domestically and abroad, including an apartment in the Logroval XVI Residential in the National District and a villa in La Altagracia province.

To facilitate the acquisition of “high-value real estate with funds stolen from the state,” the prosecution alleges the creation of a shell company, OML Inversiones, S.R.L., which Gómez Canaán reportedly used specifically for these purposes.

The document further notes that other properties purchased in the National District and Jarabacoa were registered in the defendant’s name but “financed with money derived from irregular contracts.”

The case highlights serious accusations of million-dollar purchases, espionage, and sabotage against the state, positioning it as a major corruption scandal in the Dominican Republic.

Gomez is legendary for his involvement in governments that over the years gave him access to insider intelligence information. This has led to social media and YouTubers commenting on who will talk about who high up in government had backed Intrant director Hugo Beras to move forward with the Gomez company contracting.

Recently, the Abinader administration desisted from extending the DeKolor driver license contract that a Gomez company had held for years.
