The much-awaited monorail system, Phase I, planned for the Dominican Republic’s second city, Santiago de los Caballeros, will not be tested this December 2025. Jhael Isa, head of the Trust for the Development of Mass Transit in the Dominican Republic (Fitram), made the announcement late last week.
This is due to a slight change in the path of the monorail system between a residential area and the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra. Initially, the rail system was going to border the residential area, but after negotiations with the university, the rail line will now pass through the western side of the Santiago campus of the PUCMM so as not to disturb the residential area.
With the cable car system already working, the arrival of the monorail should reduce the traffic situation in the central part of the town.
Full-scale trials are expected to be initiated in March 2026, according to the statements from Fitram.
