Who will be the next Police chief in the Dominican Republic?

The statutes of the National Police call for a maximum of two years in the position of director general. The current director, Major General Ramon Antonio Guzman Peralta was named in November 2023.

At the time, he replaced General Eduardo Alberto Then who had been named in November 2023 to the position. Previously, General Edward Sanchez, was named on 16 August 2020 and replaced on 17 October 2021.

Under the framework of Organic Law 590-16 of the National Police, Guzmán Peralta’s continued service at the helm of the institution is precarious. Article 23 of the law states that the director general can only occupy the position for a maximum period of two years.

“The designation of the director general of the National Police is made for a maximum period of two (2) years, without prejudice to the power of the President of the Republic to order his early separation,” the article specifies.

Furthermore, the law mandates that upon the conclusion of this two-year period, the Director General must be “automatically placed in retirement.”

Despite the clear legal provision requiring a new appointment or retirement, the Executive Branch has, as yet, issued no public decree or presidential order regarding the leadership change.

During the Monday, 17 November 2025 press conference, President Luis Abinader said he would comply with the obligation of replacing the police chief. He did not say who or when.
