President Luis Abinader formally received the credentials of seven new ambassadors, including the new United States envoy, Leah Francis Campos, in a ceremonial act at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, officially marking the start of their diplomatic missions in the Dominican Republic.
The ceremony was held in the Salon de Embajadores (Ambassadors’ Hall) of the Presidential Palace. Vice President Raquel Peña and Minister of Foreign Relations Roberto Alvarez accompanied President Abinader.
The appointment of Ambassador Leah Francis Campos is seen as a key step in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic did not receive an ambassador during the Biden administration, despite keeping an ambassador in Washington, D.C. throughout the time. Campos’ formal accreditation initiates her functions in the country. She has announced she will work to deepen cooperation across vital areas, including: security, trade, education and international cooperation.
The ambassadors who presented their letters of credence were from the Delegatio of the European Union, Order of Malta, India, Norway, the Czech Republic, Belarus.
The Dominican Republic officially has a US ambassador at the time President Luis Abinader travels to the United States to attend the Semiconductor Industry Association Annual Awards Dinner. The dinner will honor leading Taiwan businesspersons.
