Jose Ignacio Paliza commits for more surveillance for drug trafficking related to the ruling party

Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza is now speaking of political parties getting more involved in putting a stop to activists who may be involved in drug trafficking. For years, the position of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party has been to say there will not be impunity for those charged and convicted for drug trafficking. Several PRM party members have been charged and sentenced in the United States.

Despite calls from civic society for an active purge of suspected drug activists among candidates for electoral positions in the 2020 and 2024 elections, the party for years has seemed to look the other way. In recent years, several of these traffickers have been charged or called for arrest by the US judiciary. The local judiciary has been less active in charging and sentencing Dominicans for drug trafficking or money laundering.

For the most part, until now the ruling party has followed policies of other political parties and done little to prevent the incursion of money launderers and drug traffickers in the high ranks politics and their widespread freedom to act in the country.

The situation has changed somewhat with increased pressure from the Trump administration to put a stop to Dominicans in drug trafficking and money laundering.
