76-year old mining engineer Ramón Alburquerque is hospitalized and receiving care for liver cancer at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) of the New York Persbyterian/Columbia University Hospital in Upper Manhattan, El Nacional reports.
Alburquerque is the general manager of the Empresa Minera Dominicana, S.A. (Emidom), created by presidential decree 453-24 to coordinate efforts for the exploration, assessment and exploitation of rare earth elements deposits in the country’s southwest.
In August 2025, he had given a conference in San Francisco de Macoris at the Universidad Católica Nordestana (UCNE), to highlight the potential of the rare earth findings in the southwest, as reported at the time in Acento.
