RD Vial announces new RFID readers at tolls

Commuters utilizing the “Paso Rápido” electronic toll system in the Dominican Republic will no longer be required to manually share or input their TAG numbers at toll booths, marking a significant advancement in the country’s road network modernization.

RD Vial, the road network trust, announced the change, effective this Tuesday, following the installation of new backup RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) readers across the entire network.

Hostos Rizik, executive director of RD Vial, stated the move is a direct response to longstanding complaints from users regarding reading errors, charging issues, and duplicate fees with the existing electronic toll seals.

In a statement shared on social media, Rizik confirmed the new measures for improved traffic flow:

“Starting today, it is not necessary to share your Paso Rápido TAG number; manual entry in the toll system has been eliminated. @RD_VIAL has installed new backup RFID readers, which allow validation of passage even if your TAG fails to read in the exclusive lanes. This protects users, prevents fraud, and improves fluidity at the tolls. We continue to modernize the country’s road network.”

According to Rizik, this technological upgrade is set to increase user protection, reduce the risk of fraud, and significantly improve traffic flow at collection points. The new RFID readers ensure vehicles are validated even if the primary TAG device malfunctions in the exclusive lanes.

The Paso Rápido is an electronic device (an electronic seal/TAG) integrated with an antenna that communicates with equipment at the toll stations to verify a user’s balance and grant vehicle access. The new RFID Readers use radio waves to wirelessly read data stored on radio frequency tags. The new backup readers capture the response, decode the information, and send it for processing, making automated vehicle identification more reliable.

The announcement comes at a time when Ministry of Public Works personnel are still accepting cash payments from drivers using the lanes designated exclusively for pre-paid Paso Rápido users, Listin Diario reports.
