The Ministry of Environment says that the forestry coverage of the Dominican Republic is 43%, according to an editorial in El Dia. This is up from 10% in 1970. The editorialist says this is a turnaround from the days when cattle ranching, tree-felling businesses and harmful small farming practices had become the norm.
Vice Minister Jesus Elis Gonzalez shared the vision and actions underway to find a balance between cutting and planting trees and work for the early control of forest fires.
The Ministry is aware of positive farming actions such as coffee, cacao farming. In recent years, the planting of macadamia trees has also been a positive.
The editorial also mentions that the Ministry of Environment see as positive the installment of bioenergy farms and concludes that forestry and human activity can coexist in a balanced way.
