Star outfielder Juan Soto is only awaiting New York Mets permission to be included in the Dominican roster of the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC). The slugger, who holds the highest contract in professional sports history, declared his readiness after receiving the prestigious Juan Marichal Award for the second time. The award honors the best Dominican player in Major League Baseball.
“Everyone already knows that answer [about playing in the Classic]… we are ready,” Soto affirmed when questioned about his commitment after accepting the accolade.
Soto, 26, emphasized that his decision to represent the country was his own and a goal he had set for the coming year. “It was my decision,” he stated in an interview with “Luz García El Podcast.”
“I had always wanted to put on the Dominican Republic uniform,” he continued, recalling that he represented the nation five times as a child and wished to relive that experience.
Soto also remembered battling through finger and calf discomfort during his first WBC appearance in 2023, but his love for his country outweighed the ailments.
The commitment from Soto provides a boost, particularly after news broke last week that shortstop Elly De La Cruz would not be available due to physical issues.
Diario Libre reports that Soto is not the only high-profile player to commit. Houston Astros catcher Yainer Díaz also confirmed his desire to wear the national team’s colors, telling Diario Libre that Manager Albert Pujols had personally reached out to him about a week ago.
“I am available to participate, Pujols already spoke with me, and we are positive about it,” said a visibly emotional Díaz.
The Dominican roster so far may also includes Fernando Tatis Jr in the outfield and third baseman Manny Machado.
