US Ambassador Leah Campos visits Central Romana

US Ambassador Leah Campos completed her first official visit to a private sector entity in the Dominican Republic this week, touring the extensive sugar and agro-industrial operations of Central Romana Corporation, according to a press release from Central Romana.

The visit follows through on a commitment made by the ambassador during a recent American Chamber of Commerce (Amchamdr) luncheon, where she signaled the importance of the corporation to the bilateral trade relationship.

Ambassador Campos was accompanied by a specialized delegation including officials from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The group was received at the Central Romana headquarters by its president José Fanjul Jr., alongside executive vice presidents Ramón Menéndez, Eduardo Martínez-Lima, and Leo Matos.

The diplomatic visit began with a corporate presentation detailing Central Romana’s diverse portfolio, which spans agro-industry, manufacturing, tourism, and real estate. A significant portion of the briefing focused on the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and labor practices.

“The economic relationship between the United States and the Dominican Republic is strengthened through direct dialogue and cooperation based on facts,” stated Ambassador Leah F. Campos. “Seeing these operations and their social impact firsthand reaffirms the importance of working together as strategic partners for the economic development of both nations.”

The visitors toured the sugar mill to observe the production and refining processes. The delegation also visited agricultural communities (bateyes) to inspect schools, housing units for employees and medical sub-centers. They also held meetings with union representatives and human resources personnel.
