Dominicans consume 17 million plantains and bananas daily

The population of the Dominican Republic is around 11 million. Eulalio Ramírez, the Vice Minister of Agricultural Production, says Dominicans eat around 17 million units of plantains and bananas (both green and ripe) every day. The breakdown is 8 million units of plantains and 9 million bananas.

The official also highlighted the consumption and production of other staples in the Dominican diet:
• Chicken: Production is approximately 22 million units per month.
• Eggs: Production is around 350 million units per month, with 80 million of those being exported to markets such as Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
• Cacao exports: For the 2024-2025 cocoa year, the country exported 77,453.6 metric tons, generating US$692.5 million.
