A very solid December brings new record for tourism

With December arrivals growing by over 14%, and as many as 42,494 persons arriving in just one day (20 December 2025), the month rounded off a new record for tourists in a calendar year: 11,676,901. This is a solid 4.3% increase over the previous year, and a 37.8% increase over 2022, when the Covid-19 pandemic was over.

Nearly nine million arrived by air, and nearly three million by sea. Both these numbers are improvements are solid improvements over 2024, with cruise line passengers up fully 6%.

The director of the Dominican Institute for Civil Aviation, Igor Rodriguez, was happy to report that well over 19.5 million passengers, both arrivals and departures, used Dominican airports in 2025. These numbers have -placed the Dominican Republic as one of the major airline hubs in the entire Caribbean.

The number of arrivals was boosted by thousands who were rerouted to the Dominican Republic in December 2025 after major damages by Hurricane Melissa to their originally planned hotels in Jamaica.
