The FBI in recent Dominican investigations

In recent years, the Dominican authorities have requested, and received, investigative assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States. In fact, the federal agency has collaborated with Dominican authorities on cases involving computer hacking, disappearances, fraud and money laundering, and extraditions.

Not always do the authorities in the Dominican Republic provide the circumstances that required the assistance of the FBI. In the latest case, that of the infant Brianna Genao, who disappeared two weeks ago, set off a major investigation assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, since there are similarities with other cases of child disappearances. The case of Brianna Genao has set off a massive effort by every conceivable Dominican agency, but after two weeks there has been no news. As a result, late last week the FBI was asked to collaborate in the case.

Another case of assistance was the case of “Operation Discovery 5.0”, a ring of identity-theft and money laundering persons that swindled people in the United States. This FBI action in conjunction with the FBI brought about dozens of arrests, many extraditions, and several serving prison sentences in the Dominican Republic.

The sad case of the young Indian-American female who disappeared on the beach at Punta Cana, was another case where the FBI assisted local authorities.

Previous to this case, there was the case of President Abinader’s account on X (formerly Twitter), by persons unknown. The FBI recovered the account for the Dominican president. A Cuban, Leomar Valdes Martinez, was hiding in plain sight in San Pedro de Macoris, and he was arrested in 2015, and extradited on charges of homicide and money laundering. An entire laundry list of Dominican agencies assisted the FBI in tracking down this person, who had been wanted since 2005. Operation Miller saw FBI assistance of the recovery of precious pre-Colombian artifacts stolen by Don Miller.

Tourist fatalities in 2018 were also investigated by the FBI’s toxicology experts. And that is certainly not a complete list, but some things are not able to be divulged to the general public.
