Unesco opens call for 2026 Juan Bosch Prize in Social Sciences

Unesco has officially opened nominations for the 2026 Unesco/Juan Bosch Prize for the Promotion of Social Science Research in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to a statement released Thursday by the Dominican Republic’s Permanent Mission.

Established in 2009 to mark the centenary of the birth of the late Dominican president and scholar Juan Bosch, the biennial award targets young researchers whose work bridges the gap between academic theory and social development policies.

The prize is designed to honor “innovative and rigorous research” that addresses the contemporary challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean. According to Unesco, the goal is to highlight scientific knowledge that fosters inclusive social development across the region.

Eligibility and nomination guidelines
The competition is open to researchers under the age of 40 whose work focuses specifically on regional issues. Key requirements for the 2026 cycle include:
• No Self-Nominations: Candidates must be nominated by Unesco member states (via National Commissions) or NGOs in official partnership with Unesco.
• Language: Submissions are accepted in English, French, or Spanish.
• Documentation: Proposals must include a candidate profile, a summary of the research, supporting publications, and a statement explaining the work’s contribution to the prize’s objectives.

Recognition and deadlines
The winner will receive a US$12,000 grant along with international recognition for the contribution to the social sciences.

The Dominican delegation to Unesco has urged young researchers from the region to participate, noting that the award provides a platform for research to “inspire change” and strengthen scientific inquiry.

How to apply: Nominations must be submitted by National Commissions via email to premio.juan.bosch@unesco.org by midnight on 15 February 2026 (Paris time, GMT+1).
