Wednesday, 21 January celebrates the protector of the Dominican people, the Virgin of High Grace (La Altagracia). Hundreds of thousands of Dominicans have Altagracia as first or second name, and over the centuries even those who are not religious have appealed to the virgin in times of need.

As with most Roman Catholic religious holidays, the day will not be moved and so Wednesday, 21 January is a national holiday in the Dominican Republic. Major stores will be open and are enticing customers with sales. But government offices and most businesses and industries will give their workers the day off.

January is the month with the most holidays in the Dominican Republic. Coming up is the celebration of Duarte Day on Monday, 26 January, the next national holiday.
