The Dominican Republic is under the coldest weather in the past 10 years. Making matters worse, the country is under the effect of a system that brings wind gusts that make it all seem colder. Known as bomb cyclone or bombogenesis, this type of storm forms when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, rapidly intensifying the system.
The cold weather extends all the way from the north Atlantic Ocean down to Central America to the south. Weather forecaster Jean Suriel has described the phenomenon as one of about 5,000 to 6,000 km2. He says people will need sweaters and jackets for most of the week.
El Dia reports that the temperatures dropped below 10C in mountain areas such as Valle Nuevo, in Constanza, La Vega. Morning temperatures of 18C are forecast for Greater Santo Domingo.
The Weather Institute (Indomet) says that the cool temperatures and localized weak rainfall are expected to continue across the Dominican Republic through 7 February 2026, driven by a weakening frontal system and the seasonal influence of a high-pressure system. The north-northeasterly winds will maintain a refreshing climate, particularly in mountainous regions and the northern valleys.
The bad or good news (for those who like the chilly temperatures) is that another cold front is on its way, so while the sun is forecast to warm up the country on Thursday, 5 February and Friday, 6 February, the cold temperatures will continue as of Saturday, 7 February and for most of the rest of February, as reported in Diario Libre.
The Ministry of Public Health says that the cold weather is worsening the threat of influenza and other viral colds. People should keep away from those that have a cold. Young school children are among those that may bring the colds home to parents and grandparents.
This is the time to work on keeping one’s immune system at its best. People are urged to not brave the cold and use sweaters and jackets to keep warm because the body is not accustomed to the weather change.
