Presidential advisor and National District city public services director indicted in Florida

The former honorary advisor to the Dominican government for Free Zones, Fabio Augusto Jorge-Puras, voluntarily surrendered to United States authorities to answer accusations related to his alleged participation in an international drug trafficking network. The delivery took place on Friday, 30 January 2026 in the city of Miami, where it was taken into custody by agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The legal process is being heard in the Southern District of Florida Court and is part of a broader investigation that also involves Gaspar Antonio Polanco Virella, former director of Public Services of City Government of Santo Domingo (the Ayuntamiento del Distrito Nacional), who surrendered to US authorities in mid-October of 2025.

According to the US Department of Justice, Jorge-Puras and Polanco Virella were allegedly part of a transnational criminal organization dedicated to the trafficking of cocaine from the Dominican Republic and Colombia to US territory. Both face charges for conspiracy to distribute and

Both defendants are charged with conspiracy to distribute and import five kilograms or more of cocaine into the United States. The indictment alleges these activities occurred between 2019 and 2020.

Fabio Jorge-Puras surrendered in Miami and had his first court appearance on 29 January 2026. During this hearing, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and requested a jury trial.

The case is officially filed as USA v. Jorge-Puras et al., Case No. 1:25-cr-20430-KMM, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

A jury trial for Jorge-Puras is currently scheduled for late February 2026 in West Palm Beach, following his recent surrender and plea.
