The 2028 general election roadmap

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) officially launched the countdown to the general elections in 2028. 2028 is the year for the holding of the municipal elections (20 February 2028), followed by the presidential and congressional elections (21 May 2028).

JCE presented a comprehensive calendar of administrative milestones and legal deadlines to political parties, civil society, and the media.

The announcement, led by JCE President Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo and the JCE plenary, marks a record-breaking head start for the institution. By releasing the roadmap two years and one month ahead of the polls, the JCE has significantly outpaced the previous average preparation time of 15 months seen between 2012 and 2024.

Coinciding with the birth anniversary of founding father Ramón Matías Mella, President Jáquez Liranzo framed the early planning as a “trabucazo” (blunderbuss shot) for democracy.

Key dates for 2028
National Director of Elections Mario Núñez detailed the schedule, which includes 408 administrative activities and 117 legal deadlines. The calendar is anchored by the Dominican Constitution and current electoral laws, integrated with the JCE’s Strategic Plan for 2024–2028.

According to the JCE, the critical dates for the upcoming cycle are:
3 October 2027: Deadline for political parties to hold primary elections.
31 October 2027: Deadline for conventions, assemblies, or surveys to finalize candidates.
20 February 2028: Municipal Elections (Mayors, councilors, and directors).
21 May 2028: General Elections (Presidential, Senatorial, and Congressional, including overseas deputies).
25 June 2028: Potential run-off date for a second round of voting, if required.
